🌊 Water Guardians 🌊

Introduction

Water Guardians is a student-driven initiative launched at the International School of Lausanne (ISL). The project inspires young people to observe, understand, and actively contribute to sustainable water management in their immediate surroundings. Designed as a hands-on learning experience, the initiative empowers students to respond to local water challenges created by climate change—through practical solutions and community engagement.

Why It Matters

• Switzerland is experiencing major water shifts—from melting glaciers to longer dry seasons and increasingly unpredictable rainfall.
• Despite abundant water resources, public institutions and schools often lack systems for monitoring and optimizing water use.
• Young people are aware of the climate crisis but need guided opportunities to make a tangible difference.

Our Approach

Water Guardians equips students with the tools to become water-focused changemakers. Acting as “water detectives,” they carry out water audits in their schools and neighborhoods, identify points of water waste or inefficiency, and propose creative, low-cost interventions. Along the way, they raise awareness among peers and the broader school community through student-led campaigns, visual storytelling, and digital outreach.

How We Make It Happen

• Develop an easy-to-use toolkit that includes audit checklists, educational materials, and activity templates.
• Facilitate workshops where students learn to map water flows, detect inefficiencies, and brainstorm potential improvements.
• Encourage the development of prototype solutions—such as rainwater collection systems or greywater reuse concepts.
• Support student outreach through posters, school-wide presentations, and social media storytelling.
• Partner with other schools in Switzerland to pilot and expand the initiative into a wider youth-led network.
